Proverbs 31:24

Posted on 18 May at 15:09

“She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.”

Proverbs 31:24 is a part of the passage known as the "virtuous woman" or "the excellent wife" in Proverbs 31:10-31. This passage is a tribute to the qualities and character of a godly woman. It provides practical wisdom and guidance for women in their roles as wives, mothers, and contributors to their households and communities.

Industriousness and Skill:The verse begins by highlighting the industrious nature of the virtuous woman. It states that she "maketh fine linen." This phrase refers to her ability to produce high-quality fabric or garments. It implies that she is skilled in a particular craft or trade. The emphasis here is on her hard work, resourcefulness, and dedication to producing something valuable.

Entrepreneurial Spirit:The verse continues by stating that she sells the fine linen she makes. This suggests that the virtuous woman is not only skilled but also entrepreneurial. She recognizes the value of her products and seeks to generate income by selling them. Her actions demonstrate her wisdom in utilizing her abilities and resources to contribute to her household’s financial well-being.

Concern for Others:Additionally, the verse mentions that she delivers girdles (or belts) to the merchant. This implies that she is actively engaged in the process of distributing her products to those who would sell them. By supplying girdles to merchants, she supports the local economy and meets the needs of her community. Her actions reveal her compassion and willingness to serve others.

Overall, Proverbs 31:24 highlights the industriousness, entrepreneurial spirit, and concern for others exhibited by the virtuous woman. It emphasizes the importance of utilising one’s skills, talents, and resources for the betterment of one’s household and community. The passage serves as an encouragement for women to embrace their God-given abilities, pursue excellence, and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
