Listen to this article

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”

Context:Proverbs 31 is known as the "virtuous woman" passage or the "woman of noble character." It is a poetic description of an exemplary wife and mother. This passage is often taught to highlight the qualities of a godly woman and to provide guidance for women in various roles.

Virtuous Woman:The verse begins by asking a rhetorical question, "Who can find a virtuous woman?" The term "virtuous" can also be translated as "excellent," "noble," or "capable." This woman is described as possessing outstanding qualities that go beyond external beauty or material possessions.

Price Above Rubies:The verse continues by stating that the price or value of this virtuous woman is far above rubies. Rubies were highly valued gemstones in ancient times, so the comparison emphasizes the incredible worth of such a woman. Her value cannot be measured in terms of wealth or material possessions but in her character, integrity, and her impact on the lives of those around her.

Spiritual Application:This verse can be applied in several ways to our lives:

  • Recognizing Worth:This verse encourages us to value and appreciate the virtuous women in our lives. Whether it be our mothers, wives, daughters, or female friends, we should recognize their immeasurable worth and the positive impact they have on us.
  • Pursuit of Virtue:For women, this verse can serve as an inspiration to cultivate godly character and virtues. It encourages women to pursue qualities such as integrity, wisdom, kindness, and diligence. These attributes bring honour to God and have a lasting impact on others.
  • Appreciation of Inner Beauty:This verse reminds us that true beauty lies in a person’s character and their relationship with God. It challenges our cultural emphasis on external beauty and material possessions, reminding us to focus on cultivating qualities that bring glory to God.
  • Seeking God’s Design:This verse also highlights the importance of seeking God’s design for relationships and marriage. It encourages both men and women to seek partners who exhibit godly character, rather than being solely influenced by superficial qualities.

In conclusion, Proverbs 31:10 emphasises the extraordinary value of a virtuous woman, far surpassing material wealth. It challenges us to appreciate and honour women of godly character and encourages women to pursue virtues that bring glory to God.
