Listen to this article

“She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.”

Context:Proverbs 31 is often referred to as the “Virtuous Woman” passage. It is a collection of wise teachings and advice given by King Lemuel’s mother to her son about finding a noble and virtuous wife. This passage highlights the industrious nature and resourcefulness of a woman.

Seeking Wool and Flax:In ancient times, wool and flax were essential materials for making clothing and household items. The phrase “she seeketh wool and flax” emphasizes the woman’s diligence and foresight in providing for her family’s needs. She actively looks for quality materials to work with, demonstrating her commitment to fulfilling her responsibilities.

Working Willingly with Her Hands:The second part of the verse speaks to the woman’s attitude towards her work. She does not approach her tasks grudgingly or reluctantly but works willingly and diligently. This highlights her positive and industrious spirit, which brings about productive results. She takes joy in her work and sees it as an opportunity to contribute to her family’s well-being.

Application to Our Lives:a. Diligence and Resourcefulness: The passage encourages us to be diligent and resourceful in fulfilling our responsibilities. Just as the woman seeks wool and flax, we are called to actively seek out ways to meet the needs of our families, whether it be providing physical provisions or taking care of other aspects of life.

b. Positive Attitude: The woman’s willingness to work with her hands teaches us the importance of maintaining a positive attitude towards our work. We should embrace our responsibilities and tasks, seeing them as opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to our families and communities.

c. Embracing Industry: This verse also encourages us to appreciate the value of hard work and manual labor. The woman’s willingness to work with her hands implies that she does not shy away from physical tasks. We are reminded that there is dignity and honor in all forms of work when approached with the right attitude.

d. Seeking Excellence: The woman’s active pursuit of quality materials suggests the importance of seeking excellence in our endeavors. Whether it is in our professional or personal lives, we should strive to do our best, seeking out the best resources and tools available to us.

Overall, Proverbs 31:13 challenges us to be diligent, resourceful, and positive in our work. It reminds us that our attitude towards our responsibilities matters and that we can find fulfillment in contributing to the well-being of our families and communities.
