Listen to this article

“Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

Context of Proverbs 31:31:

Proverbs 31 is often referred to as the "virtuous woman" or "excellent wife" passage. It is an acrostic poem composed by King Lemuel, inspired by his mother’s teachings. This passage is located at the end of the chapter and serves as a concluding verse.

The Virtuous Woman:Throughout Proverbs 31, the passage describes the qualities and actions of an ideal woman. She is diligent, trustworthy, industrious, and known for her wisdom and kindness. She takes care of her family, manages her household, and engages in various business activities.

Fruit of Her Hands:The phrase "fruit of her hands" represents the results or outcomes of the virtuous woman’s labor and efforts. It encompasses both her tangible and intangible contributions to her family, community, and society. The virtuous woman’s actions yield positive and valuable results, which are symbolized by the fruit of her hands.

Let Her Own Works Praise Her in the Gates:This phrase suggests that the virtuous woman’s actions and accomplishments should be recognized and acknowledged publicly. The "gates" were significant places in ancient cities where legal matters, commerce, and public gatherings took place. It was a place of authority and decision-making. By mentioning the gates, the verse indicates that the virtuous woman’s reputation and praise should extend beyond her immediate family and reach the wider community.

Lessons and Application:

  • Diligence and Hard Work:The virtuous woman’s character serves as an example for both men and women to embrace diligence and work hard in their endeavors. Her dedication and commitment to her responsibilities are commendable and worthy of imitation.
  • Impact on Others:The virtuous woman’s actions have a positive impact on those around her. She is a source of inspiration, and her works speak for themselves, leading to praise and recognition.
  • Recognition and Appreciation:This verse emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the contributions of others. It encourages us to celebrate and honor those who demonstrate godly character and lead by example.
  • Public Witness:The virtuous woman’s reputation extends beyond her immediate sphere of influence. Her actions and character are witnessed and praised in the wider community. This highlights the significance of living a life that reflects godly values, as it can have a positive influence on others.

Overall, Proverbs 31:31 celebrates the virtuous woman and her impact on her family, community, and society. It encourages us to recognize and appreciate the fruit of her labor, as well as the value of living a life that reflects godly virtues.
