Proverbs 31:30
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:30 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes the passage about the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:10-31. That passage describes her hard work, wisdom, kindness, and care for her household. Verse 30 gathers these qualities into one clear statement about what truly gives a woman lasting worth.
Meaning
“Favour is deceitful” means charm or outward attractiveness can mislead. People may admire a pleasing manner, but such favour does not reveal a person’s heart. It can hide a selfish or unkind character. “Beauty is vain” means physical beauty is temporary and empty. It fades through illness, age, and death. Neither charm nor beauty can give lasting value.
The center of the verse is the fear of the Lord. In Hebrew, this fear means reverence, awe, and faithful obedience to God, not terror. A woman who fears the Lord honors Him, seeks His wisdom, and lives by His principles. Her worth rests on her relationship with God, not on outward appearance.
Biblical connections
The promise “she shall be praised” has two parts. Her children and husband praise her, as Proverbs 31:28-29 shows. More importantly, God Himself approves of her life. Human praise fades, but divine approval endures forever. This connects with the Bible’s repeated teaching that inner godliness matters more than outward show.
Application
This verse calls every reader to examine what they value. Do we judge ourselves and others by charm or beauty? Such standards deceive us. Instead, we should seek the fear of the Lord, which produces humility, integrity, and obedience. This applies to men and women alike, for all are called to revere God.
Reflection
True praise comes from a life rooted in God. When we fear the Lord, our character reflects His holiness, and our actions bring honor to Him. Earthly recognition is uncertain, but God’s approval is sure. Let this verse encourage us to pursue godliness above all, knowing that such a life will be praised both now and forever.
