Proverbs 31:9

Listen to this article

Open thy mouth, iudge righteously, and plead the cause of the poore and needy. Proverbs 31:9 (KJV)

Proverbs 31 contains two distinct sections. Verses 1‑9 record the advice of King Lemuel’s mother to her son, while verses 10‑31 describe the virtuous woman. The quoted verse falls within the mother’s counsel, specifically Proverbs 31:9, and is addressed to someone in authority rather than being part of the later virtuous‑woman passage.

The instruction to “open thy mouth” signifies speaking up, raising one’s voice, and actively engaging in matters of justice and righteousness. It urges individuals not to remain silent or indifferent but to use their words to make a difference for the vulnerable.

To “judge righteously” emphasizes the importance of fair and impartial judgments. It calls those who have influence or authority to exercise judgment with integrity, impartiality, and a commitment to upholding God’s principles of justice and righteousness.

The final phrase, “plead the cause of the poor and needy,” urges believers to become advocates for the marginalized, to defend the rights of those who cannot speak for themselves, and to seek justice on their behalf.

Practical applications flow naturally from this counsel. Believers are encouraged to support charitable organisations and initiatives that serve the poor and needy; to speak out against injustice and inequality in social, economic, or systemic forms; to volunteer time and resources to directly help those who are less fortunate; to educate themselves about the issues faced by the poor and needy and become informed advocates; to encourage fair and just policies within local communities, workplaces, and institutions; and to extend compassion and kindness, recognising the inherent dignity of every individual.

In summary, Proverbs 31:9 serves as a timeless reminder to use one’s voice and influence in pursuit of justice and mercy. It calls believers to actively pursue justice, to champion the cause of the vulnerable, and to demonstrate compassion to those who require our support.
