Ecclesiastes 7:11

Listen to this article

“Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.”

Context:The book of Ecclesiastes is traditionally attributed to King Solomon, who reflects on the meaning of life and the pursuit of wisdom. The verse in question is part of Solomon’s exploration of wisdom and its benefits.

Wisdom and Inheritance:The verse begins by stating that wisdom is good when combined with an inheritance. Inheritance refers to an estate or possessions received from one’s ancestors. Here, Solomon acknowledges that having wisdom alongside material wealth is beneficial.

Profit to Those Who See the Sun:The verse goes on to state that there is profit for those who “see the sun” through wisdom combined with an inheritance. “Seeing the sun” is a metaphorical expression for being alive, experiencing life’s blessings, and enjoying its benefits. The implication is that wisdom, when coupled with inherited wealth, brings advantages and prosperity to a person’s life.

Wisdom as a Complement:This verse emphasizes the value of wisdom when it is combined with an inheritance. It suggests that wisdom is not only useful in and of itself but also complements material wealth. Wisdom helps individuals make wise decisions, manage their resources well, and use their inheritance wisely.

A Balanced Perspective:It is essential to note that Ecclesiastes offers a balanced perspective on the pursuit of wisdom and the accumulation of wealth. Throughout the book, Solomon cautions against placing too much importance on worldly possessions, recognizing their fleeting nature. He encourages a balanced approach to life, where wisdom guides the use of material wealth rather than the other way around.
