Ecclesiastes 7:12
For wisedome is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellencie of knowledge is, that wisedome giueth life to them that haue it. Ecclesiastes 7:12 (KJV)
For wisdom
is a defence,
and money
is
a defence: but the excellency of knowledge
is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. Ecclesiastes 7:12 (KJV)
The book of Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon, who was renowned for his great wisdom. In this work Solomon reflects on the meaning of life and the vanity of worldly pursuits, and Ecclesiastes 7:12 forms part of his sober observations.
Solomon first declares that wisdom is a defence. By “defence” he means a protective shield that enables discernment and right choices based on understanding and knowledge. Wisdom guards us against the negative consequences of foolish decisions, helps us navigate life’s challenges, and empowers us to make godly choices.
He also notes that money can act as a defence. While money is not inherently evil, it can provide security, comfort, and the means to meet our needs. Yet money alone cannot offer ultimate fulfillment or true protection; it is temporary, can be lost, and may be misused.
The passage then highlights the excellency of knowledge. Knowledge is more than mere information; it is insight gained through wisdom. When combined with wisdom, knowledge brings life, enriches our existence, enables meaningful choices, and deepens our relationship with God.
The Bible consistently encourages the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” We are urged to seek wisdom from God (James 1:5) and to acquire knowledge through diligent study of Scripture (2 Timothy 2:15).
True wisdom and knowledge, however, come from the Lord. Proverbs 2:6 affirms, “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” As we seek God, study His Word, and walk in obedience, He grants us the insight needed to live in a way that honors Him.
In conclusion, Ecclesiastes 7:12 reminds us of the importance of wisdom, the limited value of money, and the surpassing excellence of knowledge. While both wisdom and money can provide temporary defence, it is the knowledge that comes from God that truly gives life. Let
us therefore pursue wisdom and knowledge from the Lord and apply them daily, bringing honour and glory to Him.
