2 Timothy 2:15

Listen to this article

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Context:It is important to understand the context of this verse. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, his young protégé and fellow worker in the ministry. Paul encouraged Timothy to be faithful and diligent in his service to God despite challenges and opposition.

Study:The verse begins with the word Study. Here, study means to make an effort, be diligent, or be zealous in seeking knowledge and understanding. It implies a disciplined approach to the Word of God. As believers, we are called to engage with Scripture actively, to read, meditate, and reflect upon it.

Approval from God:The purpose of studying is to shew thyself approved unto God. This means seeking God’s approval and being found faithful in His sight. Our ultimate goal is not to please people but to please God. Studying the Word of God enables us to understand His will and align our lives accordingly.

Workman That Needeth Not to Be Ashamed:The verse describes the diligent student of the Word as a workman that needeth not to be ashamed. A workman diligently performs his work with skill and precision, producing good results. Similarly, as believers, we are called to diligently handle the Word of God, ensuring accuracy and faithfulness in its interpretation and application. This way, we will not be ashamed before God or others.

Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth:The final part of the verse instructs us to rightly divide the word of truth. This phrase emphasizes the importance of correctly handling or interpreting Scripture. It implies accurately understanding and teaching the message of God’s Word, avoiding misinterpretation or distortion. By rightly dividing the Word, we can discern truth from error and effectively apply it in our lives.
