2 Timothy 2:14

Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

2 Timothy 2:14 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, his disciple and a young pastor, while Paul was imprisoned in Rome. In this verse, Paul instructs Timothy on how to handle certain issues arising within the church.

Paul urges Timothy to put the believers in remembrance of essential teachings that were in danger of being neglected or forgotten. As a pastor, Timothy was responsible for maintaining and passing on the core truths of the faith. The charge is made “before the Lord,” meaning in the presence of God, which underscores the seriousness of the matter.

Paul then warns against “striving about words“—fruitless disputes and quarrels over mere semantics or verbal controversies. Such arguments are “to no profit” because they do not build up the hearers. Worse, they lead to the “subverting of the hearers,” upsetting and undermining their faith. The focus should not be on petty arguments but on edifying and encouraging one another.

The immediate context in 2 Timothy 2:15-18 shows the danger of such disputes: profane and vain babblings increase to more ungodliness, spread like gangrene, and overthrow the faith of some, as seen in Hymenaeus and Philetus. The positive counterpart is to “rightly divide the word of truth,” presenting oneself approved to God.

Believers today are called to prioritize spiritual growth and the building up of the body. Engaging in contentious debates that yield no spiritual benefit detracts from this purpose and can cause division. Instead, we should focus on the essential doctrines of the faith and encourage one another in love.

This verse emphasizes the importance of keeping the primary teachings of the faith in focus and avoiding unnecessary and unprofitable arguments that can undermine spiritual growth and unity. The responsibility of teachers is to remind, charge, and guard against harmful speech, protecting the faith of the listeners.
