Listen to this article

“When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)”

This verse is part of the book of Ecclesiastes, which is attributed to King Solomon. Ecclesiastes is a philosophical and reflective book that explores the meaning of life and the pursuit of wisdom. It examines the various aspects of life and provides insights into the human condition.

In Ecclesiastes 8:16, the author reflects on his pursuit of wisdom and his observations of the activities on earth. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning:

"When I applied mine heart to know wisdom": This indicates the author’s intentional and dedicated effort to seek and understand wisdom. It suggests a deep desire to gain insight and understanding about life’s complexities and mysteries. It implies that the pursuit of wisdom requires active engagement and a whole-hearted approach.

"To see the business that is done upon the earth": The author observes the affairs and activities taking place on earth. This refers to the actions, events, and transactions occurring among people. It reflects the author’s exploration of the nature of human endeavours and the workings of the world.

"(for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:": This phrase highlights the author’s commitment to his task. It describes someone who is vigilant and does not sleep, constantly observing and seeking knowledge. It emphasises the author’s dedication to the pursuit of wisdom, showing his unwavering focus and determination.

Overall, Ecclesiastes 8:16 reminds us of the importance of actively seeking wisdom and understanding. It encourages us to engage our hearts and minds in the pursuit of knowledge, reflecting on the activities and affairs of the world. The verse also serves as a reminder that the pursuit of wisdom requires diligence and dedication, as demonstrated by the person described in the latter part of the verse, who remains awake day and night.

This verse invites us to consider the value of wisdom in our own lives, urging us to be intentional in our pursuit of understanding and to observe the world with discerning eyes. It encourages us to be active participants in seeking wisdom rather than passively accepting the status quo.
