Ecclesiastes 11:9

Listen to this article

“Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.”

Context:The book of Ecclesiastes, written by King Solomon, explores the meaning and purpose of life. Solomon reflects on his experiences and offers wisdom to the readers. In this verse, Solomon addresses young people and encourages them to enjoy their youth but also to be mindful of God’s judgment.

Rejoicing in youth:Solomon acknowledges the vitality and energy of youth. He advises young individuals to rejoice in their youth and allow their hearts to be cheerful. This highlights the importance of embracing the season of life one is in and finding joy in it.

Following the desires of your heart:Solomon suggests that young people should “walk in the ways of thine heart.” This does not mean giving in to every whim or indulging in sinful desires but rather pursuing the passions, dreams, and aspirations that align with godly principles. It encourages young individuals to explore their talents, make use of their abilities, and seize opportunities with enthusiasm.

Living in the sight of your eyes:The phrase “in the sight of thine eyes” implies that young people should make wise choices based on their own understanding and observations. It suggests the importance of personal discernment and using one’s God-given wisdom to make decisions. However, this should be done within the boundaries of God’s commands and principles.

Accountability and judgment:The verse concludes with a sober reminder that God will bring everyone into judgment for their actions. While young people are encouraged to enjoy their youth, they should also be aware that their choices and behavior will have consequences. It emphasizes the responsibility of living with an awareness of God’s judgment and seeking to align one’s actions with His will.
