Song of Solomon 2:10
My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
Song of Solomon 2:10 (KJV)
Context
The Song of Solomon is a poetic book of the Old Testament, often understood as portraying the love between God and His people, or between Christ and the Church. In verse 9, the beloved stands behind a wall, looking through the windows. Having drawn near, he now speaks directly to the bride. His call is personal and clear, and she repeats his words exactly. The phrase “my beloved spake” can also be rendered “my beloved answered,” suggesting a response to an unspoken longing for his presence.
Meaning
The speaker is the beloved, the groom, addressing the bride. “Rise up” is an invitation to action, to leave rest and engage with him. “My love, my fair one” shows deep affection and admiration. The call to “come away” urges movement toward intimacy, leaving behind distractions. The following verses give the reason: winter is past, rain is over, and flowers appear. The time for this invitation has arrived. It is not a distant wish but a spoken call that requires a response.
Biblical connections
The language of mutual belonging appears elsewhere in the song, as in “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine” (Song of Solomon 6:3). This points to an exclusive, inseparable bond. Allegorically, it reflects the relationship between Christ the Bridegroom and the Church His bride. The beloved’s call is not distant; it is a spoken invitation that requires a response. The seasonal imagery in verses 11-13 shows that the time for this call has arrived.
Application
Believers are encouraged to respond to God’s call to a personal relationship. Rising up means leaving behind anything that hinders devotion. Coming away means drawing near through prayer, Scripture, and worship. Active participation is required; we are not passive but responsive to His leading.
Reflection
God sees His people as precious and beautiful despite their flaws. His call is timely and personal. Each believer is invited to rise, to recognize the beloved’s love, and to come away into deeper intimacy with the Divine, prioritising that relationship above all else.
