Isaiah 5:26

And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:

Isaiah 5:26 (KJV)

Isaiah 5 opens with the “Song of the Vineyard,” a parable in which Israel is the vineyard God lovingly planted. Instead of good grapes, it yielded wild fruit, picturing the nation’s injustice and idolatry. The chapter then declares the judgment that such unfaithfulness deserves.

In verse 26, God Himself is the one who acts. He “will lift up an ensign,” a banner or signal that assembles people for battle. Here it summons distant nations to come against Israel as His instrument of punishment. The word “hiss” means to whistle or signal, calling those nations from “the end of the earth.” God’s authority reaches across the world, and His summons is effective.

The closing phrase, “they shall come with speed swiftly,” stresses the readiness and urgency of the response. The nations do not delay; they obey God’s signal at once. Verses 27–30 describe this army as tireless, well-armed, and fierce, confirming that the judgment will be swift and overwhelming.

This verse echoes the covenant warnings in Deuteronomy 28:49, where God said He would bring a nation “from far” against Israel if they disobeyed. Isaiah 5:26 shows that promise becoming reality. It also demonstrates God’s sovereignty over all nations, using even pagan powers to accomplish His purposes.

For Israel and Judah, this was a call to repentance before judgment fell. For readers today, it is a sober reminder that God is holy and just, and that sin has consequences. It also encourages believers to trust that God is sovereign over history and that His word never fails. When He speaks, events move swiftly to fulfill His will.

God’s signal in this verse was a warning of judgment, but His call to us today is an invitation to grace through Christ. The same God who summoned nations can direct our lives. The proper response is not complacency but humble obedience, heeding His word while there is still time.
