Isaiah 5:24
Therfore as the fire deuoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaffe, so their root shall be rottennes, and their blossome shall goe vp as dust: because they haue cast away the Lawe of the Lord of hosts, and despised the worde of the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 5:24 (KJV)
This verse belongs to the larger passage in Isaiah 5 known as the “Song of the Vineyard,” a prophetic declaration of judgment against Israel. The prophet Isaiah speaks on behalf of God, using vivid agricultural imagery to convey the severity of divine judgment.
The image of fire devouring the stubble and flame consuming the chaff illustrates swift and complete destruction. Just as fire reduces worthless stubble and chaff to ash, God’s judgment will consume those who have rebelled against Him and rejected His law.
The reference to a rotten root and a blossom that rises as dust further underscores the total collapse of the people’s foundation. The root represents ancestry, heritage, and the spiritual foundation of Israel; the blossom signifies potential and fruitfulness that flow from a faithful relationship with God. Because of disobedience, the root becomes rotten—signifying spiritual decay—and the blossom turns to dust, indicating a loss of prosperity and fruit.
The cause of this judgment is explicitly stated: the people have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. By rejecting God’s law and disregarding His commands, they have turned away from the One who created and sustains them.
In its broader context, the verse serves as a stark warning to Israel, urging repentance and a return to obedience. It emphasizes that adherence to God’s law is essential and that persistent disobedience brings severe consequences.
For contemporary readers, the passage reminds us of the importance of honoring and respecting God’s Word. It calls each person to examine their own life, to assess whether they are faithfully following God’s commandments or have strayed from His path. The text also underscores the need for repentance and warns of the consequences that can result from persistently rejecting divine truth.
In summary, Isaiah 5:24 delivers a solemn warning about the outcomes of disregarding God’s law. Its timeless message challenges believers today to pursue obedience, seek repentance, and recognize the grave ramifications of turning away from the Holy One’s word.
