Isaiah 9:16

For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

Isaiah 9:16 (KJV)

The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament containing prophecies and messages delivered by the prophet Isaiah. The overall theme is God’s judgment and restoration. In this passage, Isaiah addresses the northern kingdom of Israel, also called Ephraim, and its leaders who have led the people astray. The preceding verses describe God’s judgment on Israel for disobedience and idolatry, and verse 16 specifically indicts the leaders for causing the people to err.

The Hebrew word translated “leaders” can also be rendered “they that call them blessed” or “eulogists,” indicating leaders who flattered the people and promised them well-being despite their sins. This false reassurance hardened the people in their iniquities and caused them to wander from the way of truth. The second half of the verse states that those who are led are “destroyed” or “swallowed up,” showing that followers share in the nation’s destruction. The leaders’ responsibility was to guide the people in God’s ways, but instead they allowed all to indulge in sin.

Isaiah 3:12 uses similar language, “they which lead thee cause thee to err,” showing a consistent theme of corrupt leadership leading God’s people astray. The following verse, Isaiah 9:17, indicates that God will not spare even the fatherless and widows because of the nation’s wickedness, highlighting that both leaders and followers are accountable.

This verse serves as a warning against leaders who mislead their people and the dire consequences that follow. It underscores the significance of godly leadership and the need for individuals to be discerning in their choice of leaders. It encourages us to seek leaders who align with God’s will and to take personal responsibility for our own spiritual growth and obedience to God’s Word.

Consider the influence of those who guide you, whether in church, community, or family. Pray for wisdom to discern truth from flattery, and ask God to raise up leaders who will faithfully point others to Him.
