Isaiah 9:17

Listen to this article

“Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.”

This verse is part of a larger passage found in Isaiah 9:8-21, which addresses the judgment that God would bring upon the northern kingdom of Israel. In this section, the prophet Isaiah delivers a message of warning and rebuke to the people of Israel, primarily directed toward their leaders and influential individuals.

Let’s break down Isaiah 9:17 and explore its key themes:

Lack of Joy and Mercy:The verse begins by stating that the Lord will have no joy in their young men, and He will not show mercy to the fatherless and widows. This signifies a severe judgment on the people. God’s absence of joy suggests that their actions and behavior have brought about great displeasure and grief to Him. Additionally, the lack of mercy towards vulnerable groups reflects the people’s disregard for the marginalized and needy in society.

Hypocrisy and Evildoing:The verse further states that everyone in the nation is a hypocrite and an evildoer. This indictment highlights the pervasive nature of sin and corruption among the people of Israel. The leaders and individuals in influential positions were engaging in hypocritical behaviour, outwardly professing righteousness while internally harbouring wickedness. This hypocrisy extended to their treatment of others and the words they spoke.

Folly and God’s Anger:The passage continues by stating that every mouth speaks folly. The people’s words were characterised by foolishness, lacking wisdom and discernment. Instead of using their tongues for righteousness and truth, they spoke foolish and empty words. Despite these actions and words, the verse notes that God’s anger is not turned away, and His hand is stretched out still. This emphasises that God’s judgment is imminent and will not be averted. His hand is extended, ready to execute His righteous judgment.

The overall message conveyed in Isaiah 9:17 is one of condemnation for the people’s sinful behaviour, hypocrisy, and disregard for the vulnerable. It highlights the seriousness of their actions and warns of God’s impending judgment. It serves as a call to repentance and a reminder of the consequences that follow persistent disobedience.

As with any passage in the Bible, it is essential to consider the historical context and the broader themes within the book of Isaiah to fully grasp the meaning and application of the verse.
