Isaiah 24:13
When thus it shalbe in the midst of the land among the people: there shall be as the shaking of an oliue tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. Isaiah 24:13 (KJV)
Isaiah 24 is a chapter that announces divine judgment and devastation that will come upon the earth because of its inhabitants’ rebellion against God. In this verse the prophet uses vivid, agricultural imagery to portray the condition of the land and its people during that time of judgment.
The phrase “as the shaking of an olive tree” recalls the ancient method of harvesting olives by vigorously shaking the tree so that the fruit would fall to the ground for collection. The image therefore suggests a thorough and violent upheaval, a shaking or sifting of the people as olives are shaken from the tree. It conveys the idea that judgment will be extensive, leaving no part of the population untouched.
The second image, “as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done,” refers to the practice of gathering the few grapes that remained on the vine after the main harvest. Those leftover grapes were often left for the poor to collect. In the prophetic context the metaphor indicates that only a small remnant will survive after the judgment, just as a few grapes are left after the primary harvest.
Both metaphors together paint a picture of widespread devastation followed by a sparse remnant. Historically, shaking an olive tree and gleaning grapes were familiar practices in the ancient Near East, and the prophet’s use of them would have resonated strongly with his original audience.
To grasp the full weight of this warning, readers should study the entire chapter of Isaiah 24 and the surrounding verses. Doing so provides a broader picture of the prophetic message, the reasons for the coming judgment, and the hope that may be found beyond the depicted devastation.
