Isaiah 24:13

When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.

Isaiah 24:13 (KJV)

Isaiah 24 announces divine judgment upon the earth because of its inhabitants’ rebellion against God. The prophet uses agricultural imagery to portray the condition of the land and its people during that time of judgment.

The phrase “as the shaking of an olive tree” recalls the ancient method of harvesting olives by vigorously shaking the tree so the fruit falls to the ground. This suggests a thorough and violent upheaval, a shaking or sifting of the people, leaving no part of the population untouched.

The second image, “as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done,” refers to gathering the few grapes that remain after the main harvest, often left for the poor. In the prophetic context, this indicates that only a small remnant will survive after judgment, just as a few grapes are left after the primary harvest.

Both metaphors together depict widespread devastation followed by a sparse remnant. Shaking an olive tree and gleaning grapes were familiar practices in the ancient Near East, making the prophecy vivid and relatable to its original audience. The phrase “in the midst of the land among the people” emphasizes that this judgment is widespread, affecting all nations.

This passage encourages believers to recognize the seriousness of sin and judgment, while trusting in God’s mercy to preserve a people for Himself. It calls for humility and dependence on God, knowing that human strength and prosperity can be stripped away in an instant. The agricultural metaphors remind us of the fragility of earthly blessings and the enduring nature of God’s purposes.

Readers should study the entire chapter of Isaiah 24 and the surrounding verses to grasp the full weight of this warning, the reasons for the coming judgment, and the hope found beyond the depicted devastation. The remnant, though small, will survive to praise God, as indicated in the following verses.
