Isaiah 29:5

Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

Isaiah 29:5 (KJV)

Isaiah 29 addresses Jerusalem, called Ariel in the preceding verses, warning of judgment because the people honored God with their lips while their hearts were far from Him. The prophet describes the city’s distress and the approach of enemies, yet this verse turns to the promise of deliverance.

The “multitude of thy strangers” refers to the foreign nations that would come against Jerusalem, and the “terrible ones” are the oppressors and enemies of God’s people. Comparing them to “small dust” and “chaff that passeth away” emphasizes their insignificance and transitory nature. The phrase “at an instant suddenly” underscores that God’s intervention will be swift and unexpected, leaving the enemies scattered and vanquished.

This verse highlights God’s sovereignty and power to deal decisively with the enemies of His people. No matter how great the opposition may seem, God has ultimate authority to bring judgment and deliverance. The sudden destruction of the enemies demonstrates His power and faithfulness to His covenant promises.

The immediate context in Isaiah 29:6-8 describes this visitation of the LORD with thunder, earthquake, and fire, and the nations that fight against Ariel will be like a dream, vanishing away. This reinforces the certainty and completeness of the deliverance promised in verse 5.

For believers today, this verse offers assurance that no matter how formidable adversaries may appear or how overwhelming challenges may be, God is capable of intervening and bringing about a sudden change in circumstances. It encourages trust in His power and providence, knowing that He can swiftly deal with any opposition we encounter.

As we apply this to our lives, we can take comfort in the assurance that God is in control, even in the face of adversity. It reminds us to seek His guidance and rely on Him when we face difficult situations. We can find strength in knowing that God has the ability to bring about a sudden and unexpected resolution to our problems.

  • Isaiah 29:5 reminds us of God’s sovereignty, His ability to deal with our enemies, and the reassurance that He can bring about swift and unexpected deliverance. It calls us to trust in Him and seek His guidance in every situation we face.
