Isaiah 29:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:14
Listen to this article

“It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.”

This verse is part of a prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah. It is a warning to the nations who are planning to fight against Mount Zion, which symbolizes the city of Jerusalem and God’s chosen people. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning in context.

“It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty.” This imagery portrays a hungry person who dreams of eating but wakes up to find their hunger still unsatisfied. It conveys the idea that the nations planning to fight against Mount Zion will have an insatiable longing for victory, power, or conquest. However, their efforts will ultimately prove futile, leaving them unfulfilled and empty.

“Or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite.” Similarly, this analogy depicts a thirsty person who dreams of drinking but wakes up to find their thirst unquenched. It signifies that the nations’ desire for dominance or control will not be satisfied, resulting in weariness and an ongoing appetite for power that remains unfulfilled.

“So shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.” The verse concludes by stating that the multitude of nations that rise up against Mount Zion, representing Jerusalem and God’s people, will experience this unfulfilled longing. It suggests that their plans to overcome and defeat God’s people will ultimately fail, leaving them unsatisfied and weakened.

In a broader context, this verse emphasises the futility of opposing God’s plans and purposes. It serves as a warning to those who seek to challenge or harm God’s chosen people. Ultimately, God’s sovereignty and protection over His people will prevail, and the efforts of the nations will be in vain. This verse reminds us of the importance of aligning ourselves with God’s will and purposes rather than opposing them. It also serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in protecting and preserving His people despite the challenges they may face from various adversaries. Overall, Isaiah 29:8 encourages us to trust in God’s plans, knowing that those who fight against His purposes will ultimately find their efforts fruitless and unsatisfying.
