Isaiah 31:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:14

“Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.”

Context:The book of Isaiah contains prophecies given by the prophet Isaiah to the people of Judah during a time of political unrest and spiritual decline. In this verse, Isaiah is warning the people of Judah against seeking assistance from Egypt, rather than relying on God.

God’s Wisdom:The verse begins by acknowledging that God is wise. Despite the impending judgement He is bringing upon the people, God’s actions are rooted in wisdom. His ways are higher than human ways, and He knows what is best for His people.

Bringing Evil:The verse states that God will bring evil. This refers to the judgement and consequences that the people of Judah will face due to their disobedience and reliance on worldly powers. It is important to note that this “evil” is not moral evil but rather the punishment or discipline that comes as a result of their actions.

Unchangeable Word:The verse emphasises that God will not call back His words. When God speaks, His words are firm and unchangeable. This highlights the certainty of His judgement. Once God has declared His intentions, He will carry them out.

Arising Against the Evildoers:The verse states that God will rise against the house of the evildoers and those who work iniquity. Here, God is opposing the leaders and people who have turned away from Him and pursued wickedness. It highlights God’s justice and His commitment to dealing with those who persist in their rebellion.

Overall, Isaiah 31:2 reminds us of the importance of relying on God’s wisdom and guidance rather than seeking help from worldly sources. It also serves as a warning about the consequences of turning away from God and relying on human strength. As believers, we are called to trust in God’s unchanging word and seek His ways rather than relying on our own understanding or the solutions of the world.
