Isaiah 34:15
There shall the great owl make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate.
Isaiah 34:15 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to Isaiah’s prophecy of judgment against the nations, especially Edom, which opposed God’s people. The chapter describes a land reduced to ruin, where human life and prosperity cease. The imagery of wild birds taking over the land signals complete abandonment and divine desolation.
Meaning
The “great owl” (Hebrew qippoz, possibly a bird or snake) makes her nest, lays, hatches, and gathers her young under her shadow. This pictures a place where life no longer thrives, yet even in barrenness, some creatures find shelter. The owl symbolizes darkness and solitude, fitting a scene of judgment. The vultures gathered “every one with her mate” reinforce the scene of death and decay, as they scavenge on carrion. Together, these images show a land given over to desolation, where only unclean and wild creatures remain.
Biblical connections
Isaiah 34:16-17 confirms that this desolation is divinely ordained: God commands it, His Spirit gathers these creatures, and He casts the lot for the land, so they possess it forever. This shows God’s sovereign control over judgment. The phrase “every one with her mate” also contrasts with the promise that “none shall want her mate,” emphasizing that God’s judgment is thorough and complete. This reversal of creation—where human civilization once thrived, now only wild animals dwell—echoes the broader biblical theme of God’s judgment on sin.
Application
For believers, this verse is a sobering reminder of the consequences of sin and the certainty of God’s judgment. It calls for humility and repentance, recognizing that God’s justice is real. Yet it also points to God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His word and foreshadows the ultimate victory of His kingdom, where His justice prevails. Christians are encouraged to trust in God’s sovereignty, live righteously, and find hope in His redemption, even amidst judgment.
