Isaiah 38:7
“Then Isaiah said, ‘Take a lump of figs.’ So they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.”
Context:This verse is part of a historical account that describes King Hezekiah’s illness and his miraculous recovery. To understand the significance of Isaiah 38:7, let’s provide some context.
In Isaiah 38, we find King Hezekiah of Judah suffering from a severe illness, which the prophet Isaiah predicted would lead to his death. In verse 1, Isaiah tells Hezekiah to set his house in order because he will not recover from his illness.
In response, Hezekiah prays fervently to the Lord and pleads for mercy. As a result, God hears Hezekiah’s prayer and instructs Isaiah to go back and deliver a new message to the king. This brings us to verse 7.
Isaiah, acting as a prophet and messenger of God, tells Hezekiah to take a lump of figs and apply it to the boil or the sore. Hezekiah and those attending to him follow the prophet’s instructions, and as a result, Hezekiah experiences a miraculous recovery. He is healed, and his life is extended by fifteen years.
This verse raises several interesting points:
Divine Intervention:The healing of Hezekiah is a clear demonstration of God’s power and mercy. Hezekiah’s illness was severe, and it appeared to be a hopeless situation. However, God chose to intervene in response to Hezekiah’s prayer and the prophet Isaiah’s intercession.
Symbolism of the Figs:The use of figs in this healing process may have both practical and symbolic significance. Figs were known for their medicinal properties in the ancient world, and applying a fig poultice to a boil or sore could promote healing. However, the figs in this context also serve as a sign of God’s healing power. The method employed, though seemingly ordinary, becomes a vehicle for God’s extraordinary work.
Faith and Obedience:Hezekiah’s willingness to follow Isaiah’s instructions demonstrates his faith and obedience to God’s word. He could have disregarded Isaiah’s directive as trivial or illogical, but he trusted in God’s message and acted accordingly. This highlights the importance of faith and obedience in our relationship with God.
God’s Sovereignty:The healing of Hezekiah serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty over life and death. Despite the initial pronouncement of his impending death, Hezekiah’s prayer and God’s intervention brought about a change in the divine plan. This event affirms that God has the authority to alter circumstances according to His will and purposes.
Overall, Isaiah 38:7 showcases the power of prayer, the role of faith and obedience, and God’s ability to bring about healing and extend life. It serves as a reminder of God’s compassion and sovereignty, providing encouragement and hope for believers throughout generations.
