Isaiah 38:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

Behold, I will bring againe the shadow of the degrees which is gone downe in the Sunne-diall of Ahaz ten degrees backward: so the Sunne returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone downe. Isaiah 38:8 (KJV)

Isaiah 38:8 is part of the narrative in the book of Isaiah that records the miraculous healing of King Hezekiah, the twelfth king of Judah. Hezekiah was a righteous ruler who sought the Lord, instituted reforms to restore true worship, and worked to remove idolatry from the land.

In this passage Hezekiah falls severely ill. The prophet Isaiah is sent to deliver a message from the Lord that Hezekiah will not recover but will die. In response Hezekiah cries out to God, reminding Him of his faithful service and pleading for life. God hears his earnest prayer and promises a tangible sign to confirm His answer.

The sign is the reversal of the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz. Ahaz, a former king of Judah, had a well‑known time‑keeping device, and God declares that He will cause the shadow to move backward by ten degrees. This miraculous movement accompanies the extension of Hezekiah’s life, confirming that the promised deliverance is real.

The significance of this miracle lies in its demonstration of God’s power and faithfulness. The backward movement of the shadow defies natural law, showing that God is sovereign over time and can intervene in the created order according to His will. It also reveals His mercy and compassion toward a faithful servant who earnestly seeks Him.

From this event we learn several important lessons. First, it emphasizes the power of prayer; Hezekiah’s fervent petition moved the heart of God and resulted in a life‑saving sign. Second, it reminds us of God’s sovereignty over time and His ability to work beyond natural constraints to accomplish His purposes. Third, it highlights the faithfulness of God in keeping His promises; He gave a specific sign and fulfilled it, encouraging believers to trust in His word and rely on His perfect timing.

Overall, Isaiah 38:8 serves as a powerful reminder that God hears and answers prayer, that He is not limited by the laws of nature, and that His steadfast love and mercy are ever present for those who turn to Him in need.
