Isaiah 38:19

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

The liuing, the liuing, hee shall praise thee, as I doe this day: the father to the children shall make knowen thy trueth. Isaiah 38:19 (KJV)

Isaiah 38 records the dramatic episode of King Hezekiah’s severe illness and miraculous recovery. The prophet Isaiah initially delivered a grim message that Hezekiah would not recover but would die. In response, Hezekiah earnestly prayed to the Lord, and, following Isaiah’s instruction to apply figs to his throat, God granted him fifteen additional years of life. After experiencing this divine extension of his days, Hezekiah offered heartfelt gratitude and public praise, declaring that the living would continue to honor God.

Key Themes

Gratitude and Praise – Hezekiah recognizes that those who are alive have the privilege and responsibility to praise God. His response to the mercy shown him demonstrates a deep, thankful worship that should inspire believers to acknowledge God’s goodness in every circumstance.

Personal Testimony – Hezekiah’s own experience becomes a living testimony of God’s faithfulness and mercy. By proclaiming that his life is evidence of God’s power and truth, he encourages others to share their own stories of divine intervention, thereby strengthening the faith community.

Passing Down the Faith – Although the verse itself mentions a father making God’s truth known to children, the broader narrative underscores the parental duty to teach future generations. Parents are called to model authentic faith, impart biblical truth, and nurture a reverent understanding of God’s character in their children.

Lessons and Applications

Cultivate a Heart of Gratitude – Like Hezekiah, believers should develop a habit of thanking God for each day, recognizing that life itself is a gift from Him. This gratitude fuels worship regardless of life’s challenges.

Share Your Testimony – Every Christian possesses a unique story of God’s grace, healing, or deliverance. Sharing these experiences can encourage and uplift others, fostering a community that bears witness to God’s active work.

Pass Faith to the Next Generation – Parents and mentors must intentionally teach children about God’s faithfulness, using both instruction and example. By doing so, they ensure that the truth endures beyond their own lifetimes.

Recognize the Gift of Life – Hezekiah’s extended years remind us that each moment is valuable. Believers are urged not to take life for granted but to use every opportunity to honor and serve the Lord, living out the praise spoken in this verse.
