Isaiah 38:18

For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

Context

This verse comes from King Hezekiah’s prayer of thanksgiving after God healed him from a life-threatening illness and promised him fifteen more years of life (Isaiah 38:5). In this prayer, Hezekiah reflects on his experience and expresses gratitude for being spared from death.

Meaning

Hezekiah declares that the grave cannot praise God, death cannot celebrate Him, and those who go down into the pit cannot hope for His truth. The words “grave,” “death,” and “pit” all point to Sheol, the Hebrew concept of the realm of the dead. In death, a person loses the ability to worship God with the living, and the opportunity to trust and proclaim His truth ends. This is not a detailed doctrine of the afterlife but a poetic expression of the value of life and worship.
