Isaiah 41:4
Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he.
Isaiah 41:4 (KJV)
Context
Isaiah 41:4 stands within a larger section of the book of Isaiah (chapters 40–55) where God comforts His people, assuring them of His power, faithfulness, and sovereignty. The immediate setting addresses Israel’s fears and the threat of foreign nations, while also confronting the reality of idolatry. In the preceding verses, God speaks of raising up a righteous man from the east, and this verse asks who has accomplished such a work.
Meaning
The opening question, “Who hath wrought and done it,” emphasizes God’s active involvement in history and His ability to accomplish His purposes. The phrase “wrought and done it” points to God’s sovereign control over events, specifically the raising up of a ruler from the east. The answer begins with “calling the generations from the beginning”: it is the Lord who calls the generations. He knew them from all eternity, before they existed, and He calls them by name. He calls things that are not as though they were, bringing them into being at the appointed time and continuing a succession of generations. He also calls by His grace all who are called in successive generations.
The declaration “I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he” asserts God’s unique position as the one and only true God. He is the “first” and the “last,” indicating His eternal nature and His sovereign authority over all things. This statement provides comfort and assurance to Israel, reminding them that their God is incomparable and trustworthy. The God who called the generations from the beginning is the same God who is with His people now, and He will be with them to the end.
Application
Trust in God’s sovereignty: Isaiah 41:4 reminds us that God is in control of all generations and events. In times of uncertainty, we can find comfort and reassurance in knowing that He is the one who holds history in His hands. We can trust Him to fulfill His promises and to remain faithful to His people from the first generation to the last.
Seek God as our first and last: As the “first” and “last,” God deserves our undivided devotion and worship. We should prioritise Him above all else and recognise His authority in every area of our lives. Seeking God first means acknowledging His rightful place as the Lord of our lives and allowing Him to guide our steps.
Share God’s uniqueness with others: Isaiah 41:4 highlights the uniqueness of God as the one true God. As followers of Christ, we are called to share this truth with others, that they may come to know and worship the Lord. We should proclaim His unmatched power, love, and faithfulness to a world in need of salvation.
Reflection
God’s eternal nature and His faithful calling of every generation invite us to rest in His unchanging character. Because He is the first and the last, no circumstance lies outside His knowledge or care. This truth calls us to trust His plan, to worship Him alone, and to live with confidence that the God who began His work in history will complete it.
