Isaiah 57:4
Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,
Isaiah 57:4 (KJV)
Context
The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, containing messages from God to the people of Israel. Isaiah 57 addresses the sinful practices and idolatry of the people. In this verse, the prophet Isaiah confronts the rebellious and wicked behaviour of the Israelites, challenging them with pointed questions about their mockery.
Meaning
The verse begins with the question, “Against whom do ye sport yourselves?” This implies that the people were mocking God and ridiculing His commands. They were engaging in disrespectful behaviour, making wide mouths, and sticking out their tongues in a derisive manner. Such gestures of scorn show a lack of reverence and an attitude of rebellion towards God. The rhetorical questions expose the folly of their actions, for in mocking the righteous or God’s messengers, they are ultimately mocking God Himself.
The verse goes on to describe the people as “children of transgression.” This phrase highlights their continuous pattern of sin and disobedience. Despite being God’s chosen people, they had turned away from His ways and were actively engaged in sinful practices. Instead of living in accordance with God’s commandments, they were living in rebellion. Their identity is not merely behavioural but describes their lineage and fundamental disposition.
The verse also refers to the people as a “seed of falsehood.” This phrase suggests that they were spreading lies and deception. Their words and actions were not rooted in truth and righteousness but were characterised by deceit and dishonesty. This description underscores that their mockery flows from a nature that is sinful and false, contrasting with those who are faithful to God.
Application
This verse serves as a warning to the Israelites and to all people. It reveals the dangers of mocking and ridiculing God, and the consequences of living in rebellion and falsehood. It highlights the importance of genuine repentance and turning back to God. While this verse was originally directed towards the Israelites, its message remains relevant today. It reminds us to examine our own hearts and actions. Are we living in obedience to God’s commands, or are we engaged in rebellious behaviour? Do we honour God with our words and actions, or do we mock and ridicule Him? This verse challenges us to live lives of reverence, truth, and righteousness.
Reflection
Isaiah 57:4 warns against mocking and rebelling against God. It reminds us of the importance of living in obedience, truth, and righteousness. May we strive to honour God in all that we do and avoid the path of transgression and falsehood.
