Isaiah 57:6

Among the smooth stones of the streame is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: euen to them hast thou powred a drinke offering, thou hast offered a meate offering. Should I receiue comfort in these? Isaiah 57:6 (KJV)

Context: To better understand Isaiah 57:6, we need to examine the broader context of the verse. In the preceding chapters, the prophet Isaiah delivers messages of judgment and condemnation against the idolatrous practices and rebelliousness of the people of Israel. Isaiah 57:6 continues this theme, addressing their participation in idolatry and offering sacrifices to false gods.

Symbolism of smooth stones: In this verse, the smooth stones of the stream symbolize the idols that the Israelites had turned to for worship. These were likely carved stones or objects of reverence that represented false deities. The description of them as smooth emphasizes their aesthetic appeal and the allure they held for the people.

“Thy portion” and “thy lot”: The phrase “thy portion” refers to the idols that the Israelites had chosen to worship, and “thy lot” indicates that they had given themselves fully to these false gods. Instead of turning to the one true God, they embraced idolatry and made it their portion and lot, signifying a complete departure from God’s commandments.

Drink offering and meat offering: The verse mentions the offering of a drink offering and a meat offering to these false gods. In ancient Israelite worship, such offerings were associated with worship of Yahweh, but here they are linked to idolatry, highlighting the spiritual infidelity of the people and the perversion of sacred rites.

God’s response: The concluding question, “Should I receive comfort in these?” reveals God’s disapproval and disappointment with the Israelites’ actions. As the one true God deserving exclusive worship, He cannot find any consolation in their idolatrous practices and their rejection of His commands.
