Isaiah 58:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:05

“Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?”

Context:Before we dive into Isaiah 58:7, it’s essential to understand the context of the verse. In Isaiah 58, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah, rebuking the people of Israel for their hypocritical fasting and lack of genuine devotion to God. The chapter emphasises the importance of true fasting and genuine acts of righteousness.

Dealing bread to the hungry:This phrase highlights the call to provide for the physical needs of those who are hungry. It goes beyond mere words and emphasises taking action to alleviate the suffering of others. In a broader sense, it encourages acts of charity and compassion towards those who lack basic necessities.

Bringing the poor to your house:This part of the verse emphasises hospitality and care for the marginalised and outcast. It encourages the reader to not only meet the needs of the poor but also to welcome them into their homes, showing love, acceptance, and genuine concern.

Clothing the naked:This phrase underscores the importance of providing clothing for those who lack proper attire. It signifies our responsibility to meet the needs of the vulnerable, ensuring their dignity and well-being.

Not hiding from your own flesh:This expression suggests that we should not turn away from our own family or close relatives who are in need. It emphasises the significance of caring for and supporting our own kin, recognising our shared humanity and responsibility towards one another.

Overall, Isaiah 58:7 calls for acts of selflessness, compassion, and generosity towards those in need. It reminds us that true worship of God involves not only spiritual disciplines but also practical expressions of love and care for others. By reaching out to the hungry, the poor, the naked, and our own family members in need, we demonstrate God’s love and fulfil our calling to be a blessing to others.
