Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
Isaiah 58:7 (KJV)
Context
In Isaiah 58, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah, rebuking the people of Israel for their hypocritical fasting and lack of genuine devotion. The chapter contrasts mere religious ritual with true righteousness, and verse 7 specifies what genuine fasting looks like: concrete acts of mercy and justice rather than words or sentiments alone.
Meaning
“Deal thy bread to the hungry” calls for providing for the physical needs of those who are hungry. It goes beyond words and emphasises taking action to alleviate suffering, encouraging charity and compassion towards those who lack basic necessities.
“Bring the poor that are cast out to thy house” emphasises hospitality and care for the marginalised and outcast. It encourages the reader not only to meet the needs of the poor but also to welcome them into their homes, showing love, acceptance, and genuine concern. This implies a willingness to be personally involved and inconvenienced.
“Cover him” underscores the importance of providing clothing for those who lack proper attire. It signifies our responsibility to meet the needs of the vulnerable, ensuring their dignity and well-being.
“Hide not thyself from thine own flesh” suggests that we should not turn away from our own family or close relatives who are in need. The phrase “thine own flesh” refers to one’s own relatives or family, emphasising that care for the needy begins with and includes those closest to us, recognising our shared humanity and responsibility towards one another.
Application
Isaiah 58:7 calls for acts of selflessness, compassion, and generosity towards those in need. It reminds us that true worship of God involves not only spiritual disciplines but also practical expressions of love and care for others. By reaching out to the hungry, the poor, the naked, and our own family members in need, we demonstrate God’s love and fulfil our calling to be a blessing to others. The verse challenges believers to examine whether their religious practices are accompanied by tangible love for those in need.
