Isaiah 59:13

In transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

The verse begins with “In transgressing and lying against the Lord,” indicating a deliberate violation of God’s commandments and a distortion of truth directed against Him. This is not merely accidental failure but active rebellion and denial of His authority. The phrase “departing away from our God” emphasizes a turning away from following Him, an intentional separation from the covenant relationship.

The middle clause, “speaking oppression and revolt,” refers to using words to oppress others and to incite rebellion, showing that their sin against God manifested in harm toward people. The verse then locates the source of this evil: “conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.” The Hebrew word for heart (lev) represents the inner person—the seat of thought, will, and emotion. The people’s lies were not merely external slips; they were conceived and brought forth from a corrupt inner life.
