Isaiah 59:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:05
Listen to this article

“For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them.”

Context:To understand the verse better, we need to consider its context within the book of Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet who spoke during a time of spiritual decline in Israel. In this particular chapter, Isaiah addresses the sins and transgressions of the people of Israel. He emphasises the separation between them and God due to their rebellion and disobedience.

Multiplication of transgressions:The verse begins by acknowledging that the transgressions of the people have multiplied before God. This implies that their sins and rebellious actions have increased in number and severity. The phrase "our transgressions are multiplied before thee" highlights the extent to which the people have strayed from God’s ways.

Sins as a testimony:The verse continues by stating that their sins testify against them. This means that their wrongdoings serve as evidence of their guilt. The people’s sins stand as a witness, bearing witness to their disobedience and rebellion against God’s commandments.

The presence of transgressions and iniquities:The verse also highlights the ongoing presence of transgressions and iniquities among the people. The phrase "for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them" emphasises that the people are intimately aware of their own sins and wrongdoings. They cannot deny their guilt before God.

Overall, Isaiah 59:12 serves as a reminder of the people’s need for repentance and forgiveness. It reveals the consequences of their transgressions and emphasises the importance of acknowledging their sins before God. This verse sets the stage for the following verses in which Isaiah proclaims the redemptive power of God and the possibility of reconciliation through repentance and turning back to Him.

By examining the context and message of Isaiah 59:12, we can better grasp its significance within the broader themes of the book of Isaiah and its application to our lives today.
