Isaiah 65:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:05
Listen to this article

“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”

Historical Context:Isaiah 65 is a prophetic chapter that contains God’s promises and warnings to the Israelites. The book of Isaiah was written during a time of political turmoil and spiritual decay in Israel, and the prophet Isaiah was called by God to deliver messages of judgment and restoration.

  • The Promise of New Heavens and a New Earth:

In Isaiah 65:17, God reveals His plan to create new heavens and a new earth. This verse speaks of a future time when God will bring about a complete renewal and restoration of the world. It represents a future state of blessedness and harmony that surpasses anything experienced in the present age.

The Significance of “New Heavens and a New Earth”:The concept of new heavens and a new earth is not limited to Isaiah but is also mentioned in other biblical passages. For example, in Revelation 21:1, John sees a vision of the new heaven and the new earth. This promise signifies a complete transformation and renewal of the entire created order.

The Absence of Remembrance:Isaiah 65:17 emphasizes that the former things shall not be remembered nor come into mind in the new heavens and new earth. This indicates that the troubles, sufferings, and sorrows of the present world will be completely forgotten in the future state. God’s restoration will be so complete that the former things will pale in comparison to the glory of what is to come.

The Fulfillment in Christ:The promise of new heavens and a new earth finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus inaugurated the kingdom of God and provided a way for humanity to be reconciled with God. In Christ, believers experience a spiritual renewal and are given the hope of eternal life in the new heavens and new earth.

Application:

  • Isaiah 65:17 encourages believers to look beyond the present challenges and difficulties of life and fix their hope on the future promises of God. It reminds us that our current trials are temporary, and God has a glorious future in store for His people. As we anticipate the new heavens and new earth, we are called to live with an eternal perspective, seeking to align our lives with God’s purposes and bringing His kingdom values into the world today.

In summary, Isaiah 65:17 speaks of God’s promise to create new heavens and a new earth, representing a future state of complete renewal and restoration. It assures believers that the former things, including pain and suffering, will not be remembered or come to mind in the new creation. This verse points to the ultimate fulfillment of this promise in Jesus Christ and encourages believers to live with an eternal perspective, fixing their hope on the future glory that awaits them.
