Isaiah 65:17

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

Isaiah 65:17 (KJV)

Isaiah 65 is a prophetic chapter containing God’s promises and warnings to the Israelites. The book of Isaiah was written during a time of political turmoil and spiritual decay in Israel, and the prophet Isaiah was called by God to deliver messages of judgment and restoration. The verse begins with “For, behold,” linking it to the preceding context of God’s promises to His people, and emphasizing the certainty and wonder of what follows.

In Isaiah 65:17, God reveals His plan to create new heavens and a new earth. This is not a mere renovation but a divine act of new creation, bringing about a complete renewal and restoration of the world. It represents a future state of blessedness and harmony that surpasses anything experienced in the present age. The second half of the verse describes the effect of this new creation: “the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” This signifies a complete break from the past, where former troubles, sorrows, and sins will be so thoroughly dealt with that they will no longer cause grief or anxiety. The Hebrew concept behind “come into mind” suggests these things will not even arise upon the heart, indicating a profound and total healing of memory and consciousness.

The prophecy began to have its initial accomplishment in the first times of the Gospel, when through the preaching of the Gospel a new face of things appeared in the world, particularly with the inclusion of the Gentiles and the establishment of the New Covenant community. However, its ultimate and complete fulfillment awaits the final state of glory, when God will fully renew all things. This verse is foundational for understanding the biblical hope of a restored creation, a theme that is picked up in the New Testament, which explicitly connects this promise to the believer’s hope of a new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Isaiah 65:17 encourages believers to look beyond the present challenges and difficulties of life and fix their hope on the future promises of God. It reminds us that our current trials are temporary, and God has a glorious future in store for His people. As we anticipate the new heavens and new earth, we are called to live with an eternal perspective, seeking to align our lives with God’s purposes and bringing His kingdom values into the world today. The promise of new heavens and a new earth finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus inaugurated the kingdom of God and provided a way for humanity to be reconciled with God. In Christ, believers experience a spiritual renewal and are given the hope of eternal life in the new heavens and new earth.

In summary, Isaiah 65:17 speaks of God’s promise to create new heavens and a new earth, representing a future state of complete renewal and restoration. It assures believers that the former things, including pain and suffering, will not be remembered or come to mind in the new creation. This verse points to the ultimate fulfillment of this promise in Jesus Christ and encourages believers to live with an eternal perspective, fixing their hope on the future glory that awaits them.
