Listen to this article

“Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.”

1. Context: Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Judah during a critical period in their history. At the time, the nation had turned away from God, embracing idolatry and wickedness. Jeremiah’s ministry spanned several decades and involved warning the people of God’s impending judgment and urging them to repent and turn back to Him.

2. Fearlessness in the face of opposition: In this verse, God reassures Jeremiah, who was likely apprehensive about the task before him. The phrase “be not afraid of their faces” refers to the potential opposition, rejection, and threats Jeremiah might encounter while fulfilling his prophetic calling. God encourages Jeremiah not to be intimidated by the expressions or reactions of the people he would encounter. This message holds significance for believers today, reminding us that God’s presence and protection are with us even in the face of opposition or adversity.

3. Divine presence and deliverance: God assures Jeremiah that He would be with him throughout his ministry, delivering him from harm. This promise highlights the faithfulness and sovereignty of God. Despite the challenges Jeremiah would face, God affirms His abiding presence and His ability to protect and rescue His chosen servant. As believers, we can take comfort in knowing that God is always with us, providing guidance, strength, and deliverance in times of trouble.

4. Trusting in God’s promises: Jeremiah’s calling was daunting, as he was tasked with delivering messages of judgment and warning to a rebellious people. However, this verse reveals God’s assurance to Jeremiah and emphasizes the importance of trusting in His promises. By placing his confidence in God’s faithfulness, Jeremiah could overcome fear and fulfill his prophetic mission. Similarly, we are encouraged to trust in God’s promises, knowing that He will equip and empower us to fulfill the tasks He has set before us.

5. Application to believers today: While Jeremiah’s calling was unique to his role as a prophet, the underlying principles in this verse are applicable to believers in any era. We may face situations where we encounter opposition, ridicule, or fear, but God’s promise of His presence and deliverance remains constant. When we trust in Him, we can overcome fear and faithfully fulfill the tasks He has called us to. This verse encourages us to rely on God’s strength, knowing that He is with us every step of the way.
