Jeremiah 5:12
They haue belyed the Lord, and said; It is not he, neither shall euill come vpon vs, neither shal we see sword nor famine. Jeremiah 5:12 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic work in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was called by God to warn the people of Judah of impending judgment because of their persistent disobedience and idolatry. In this verse he records the sinful attitude and false beliefs that had taken hold among the nation.
The people had denied God’s authority and misrepresented His character. They claimed that the calamities foretold by the prophets would not affect them because they believed God was not involved in their affairs. This denial reflects a deep rebellion, spiritual blindness, and a rejection of the covenant relationship that bound them to Him.
Along with this denial they entertained a false sense of security. They believed that neither evil, nor sword, nor famine would ever touch them. Such confidence reveals their arrogance and complacency in the face of God’s clear warnings.
Because of their denial and false security they disregarded God’s impending judgment. They failed to recognize the seriousness of their sin and the consequences that would follow for the nation.
Lessons for today are clear. First, we must acknowledge God’s sovereignty and existence, never misrepresenting His nature or denying His activity in the world. Second, we should avoid placing our trust in wealth, power, or human strength, for only God can provide true security and protection. Third, we must take sin seriously, recognizing that there are real consequences and responding to the Holy Spirit’s conviction with repentance. Finally, we can rely on God’s faithfulness and justice; He remains true to His promises and will bring righteous judgment.
In conclusion, Jeremiah 5:12 warns against denying God, relying on false security, and ignoring the seriousness of sin. It calls us to acknowledge God’s sovereignty, seek true security in Him, live responsibly before His judgment, and trust in His enduring faithfulness and justice.
