Jeremiah 6:13

Posted on 18 May at 15:02

“For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s important to consider its surrounding context. Jeremiah was a prophet during a time of great moral and spiritual decline in Judah. He was called by God to warn the people of impending judgment due to their idolatry, wickedness, and unfaithfulness. In this particular passage, Jeremiah is describing the corruption and deceit that pervaded the nation, even among its leaders.

Covetousness:The verse begins by stating that “every one is given to covetousness.” Covetousness refers to an excessive desire for possessions or wealth that leads to an unhealthy pursuit of material gain. It is a form of greed and can be a destructive force in people’s lives. The prophet Jeremiah highlights that this covetousness was prevalent among all levels of society, from the least to the greatest.

Dealing Falsely:The second part of the verse states that “from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.” This reveals that not only were the common people engulfed in covetousness, but even the religious leaders were involved in deceitful practices. Both prophets and priests, who were supposed to guide the people in righteousness and worship, had become corrupt. They were no longer faithful to their calling and were leading the people astray.

Spiritual Implications:Jeremiah’s words highlight the spiritual and moral decline of the people of Judah. Their focus on material possessions and their willingness to deceive others undermined their relationship with God. Covetousness and dishonesty are sins that break the commandments of loving God and loving others. The people had turned away from God’s ways and pursued their own selfish desires, neglecting their responsibilities as stewards of God’s blessings.

Application:While this passage specifically addresses the people of Judah during Jeremiah’s time, there are timeless lessons we can glean from it. We should examine our own hearts to identify any areas where covetousness or dishonesty may be creeping in. It’s essential to cultivate contentment, gratitude, and integrity in our lives, seeking to honour God in all that we do. As leaders, whether in religious or secular settings, we should be mindful of our influence and strive to lead with honesty, integrity, and a heart that seeks God’s will above personal gain.

  • In summary, Jeremiah 6:13 serves as a warning against covetousness and deceit. It reminds us to prioritise our relationship with God, seek contentment, and live with integrity, while cautioning against the dangers of materialism and dishonesty.
