Jeremiah 6:14

They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

Jeremiah 6:14 (KJV)

Jeremiah 6:14 is part of a larger passage in which the prophet Jeremiah delivers a message of warning and judgment to the people of Judah. In this verse, God expresses His displeasure with the false prophets and leaders who offer superficial and temporary solutions to the deep spiritual and moral problems of the nation.

The phrase “They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly” describes how the religious leaders and false prophets attempted to address the spiritual and moral issues afflicting Judah, but their efforts were inadequate and insincere. The “hurt” or “wound” refers to the spiritual and moral brokenness of the people, which required a deep and honest remedy, not a superficial patch.

The words “saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace” highlight the deceptive message proclaimed by these false prophets. They declared peace and security to the people, assuring them that everything was fine and that there was no reason for concern. The repetition of “peace” emphasizes the insincerity and emptiness of their message. In reality, true peace was lacking because the people had turned away from God and were living in disobedience. The leaders were declaring peace when the nation was actually under the threat of divine judgment.

The false prophets offered empty words and false comfort instead of confronting the people’s sin and calling them to genuine repentance. Their actions were not just a mistake but a betrayal of their calling, as they led the people away from the truth and toward destruction. This verse serves as a warning against false teachers who provide superficial solutions and false assurances without addressing deeper spiritual issues.

This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking true peace and reconciliation with God through genuine repentance and obedience. It warns against the danger of preferring comforting lies over the painful truth of sin and its consequences. The broader context of Jeremiah 6 emphasizes the urgency of the situation: God’s judgment was imminent because of the people’s persistent disobedience and refusal to turn back to Him. Through Jeremiah, God called the people to repentance and warned them of the impending destruction if they continued in their rebellious ways.

We are challenged to examine whether we, like the false prophets, are tempted to proclaim peace when there is no peace—whether in our own lives or in our care for others. True healing begins with honest acknowledgment of our spiritual condition before God, leading to genuine repentance and a restored relationship with Him.
