Jeremiah 7:13

And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;

Jeremiah 7:13 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written during a time of great spiritual decline in Judah. Jeremiah 7 contains a significant portion of Jeremiah’s temple sermon, where he addresses the religious hypocrisy and idolatry prevalent in Judah.

In this verse, the Lord speaks through Jeremiah, highlighting His relentless pursuit of the people of Judah. Despite their disobedience and refusal to listen, God continues to rise early and speak to them. This emphasizes God’s patience, love, and desire for His people to turn from their wicked ways and return to Him.

The people of Judah had become complacent and disregarded God’s warnings and calls to repentance. Despite God’s attempts to communicate with them, they refused to listen and answer. Their disobedience and stubbornness resulted in severe consequences.

The verse emphasizes that the people of Judah were responsible for their actions. God had spoken to them, but they chose not to hear or respond. Their disobedience and idolatry were their own works, for which they were held accountable.

The phrase “rising up early and speaking” is an idiom for God’s earnest, persistent, and patient communication through His servants. The immediate context (Jeremiah 7:1-15) contrasts the people’s false trust in the temple with their unrepentant hearts, and warns of judgment as exemplified by the destruction of Shiloh.

For the Christian, this verse serves as a solemn reminder to heed God’s Word promptly and to respond to His call with repentance and obedience, rather than presuming on His grace while persisting in sin.

God’s patience is not an invitation to delay obedience. His call to us is urgent and persistent, and our response matters. Let us not be like Judah, who heard but did not answer, but let us turn to Him while He is near.
