Jeremiah 7:2

Listen to this article

“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord.”

Context:The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that records the messages of the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah. During Jeremiah’s ministry, the kingdom of Judah was facing moral and spiritual decay, idolatry, and social injustice. The prophet’s main message was a call to repentance and a warning of the impending judgment of God.

In Jeremiah 7:2, the Lord instructs Jeremiah to stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, which likely refers to the entrance of the temple in Jerusalem. This location was significant because it was where people would enter to worship and seek God’s presence.

Divine Commission:God instructs Jeremiah to proclaim a specific message to the people of Judah who enter the temple gates to worship. As a prophet, Jeremiah served as God’s spokesperson, delivering His word and calling the people to attention. This demonstrates God’s desire to communicate with His people and provide them an opportunity to hear His message.

Audience:The specific audience addressed in this verse is “all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord.” It refers to the worshipers who gathered at the temple, implying both the religious leaders and the general population.

Importance of Hearing:The phrase “Hear the word of the Lord” emphasizes the significance of actively listening and paying attention to the message that God is about to deliver through Jeremiah. God desires for His people to hear and understand His instructions, warnings, and promises. The call to “hear” implies an urgent need for the people to respond appropriately to God’s message.

Purpose of the Message:The message that Jeremiah was instructed to proclaim was intended to address the spiritual condition and practices of the people of Judah. God wanted to confront their sins, call them to repentance, and warn them of the consequences of their disobedience. This verse sets the stage for the following passages in which Jeremiah delivers a powerful rebuke and exposes the hypocrisy of the people’s worship.

  • Jeremiah 7:2 holds relevance for believers today. It reminds us of the importance of hearing and attentively listening to the word of the Lord. We should approach God’s Word with reverence, seeking to understand and apply it to our lives. Additionally, this verse highlights the need for true repentance and a genuine relationship with God, rather than mere religious rituals or empty worship.

As we read the Bible, let us remember that God’s Word is not just a historical record, but a living message that continues to speak to us today. It is an invitation to hear God’s voice, align our lives with His truth, and experience His transforming power.
