Jeremiah 7:22
“For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:”
Jeremiah 7:22 is part of a larger passage where the prophet Jeremiah delivers a message from God to the people of Judah. In this passage, God is rebuking the people for their disobedience and false worship. The verse itself focuses on the relationship between God and the Israelites, highlighting a misconception or misunderstanding that the people had regarding God’s commands.
To understand the context of this verse, it’s helpful to explore the surrounding verses. Starting from Jeremiah 7:21, we read:
“Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh. For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.”
In these verses, God is essentially telling the people that their religious rituals, particularly the offering of burnt offerings and sacrifices, are not the primary focus of His commandments. Instead, God emphasizes that what He truly desires from His people is their obedience and a genuine relationship with Him.
The statement “For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices” may seem contradictory to other passages in the Old Testament that talk about the importance of sacrifices. However, God is not saying that He never commanded sacrifices or that they were entirely worthless. Rather, He is highlighting that the primary emphasis of His commandments was on obedience and a heart committed to Him.
The Israelites had developed a shallow understanding of their religious practices, merely going through the motions of offering sacrifices without true devotion and obedience to God. They had distorted the purpose of these rituals, neglecting the weightier matters of justice, mercy, and righteousness (Jeremiah 7:5-7).
God’s intention was always for His people to follow His commandments and walk in His ways. The sacrifices and offerings were meant to be expressions of genuine devotion and repentance, not a substitute for obedience or a way to manipulate God’s favor.
This verse carries an important message for believers today. It reminds us that God desires our sincere obedience and a genuine relationship with Him rather than mere religious rituals or empty practices. It is a call to examine our hearts and ensure that our worship is characterized by obedience, humility, and a desire to walk in the ways of the Lord.
