Jeremiah 7:21
“Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh”
Context:The book of Jeremiah was written by the prophet Jeremiah during a critical time in Israel’s history. The people had turned away from God, engaged in idolatry, and committed various sins. God sent Jeremiah to warn the people of the consequences of their actions and to call them to repentance.
The Background:In Jeremiah 7, God speaks to the people of Judah through the prophet Jeremiah. The people were engaging in religious rituals, such as offering burnt offerings and sacrifices at the temple in Jerusalem, while simultaneously disregarding God’s commandments and living in wickedness. They were essentially using religious ceremonies as a cover for their sinful behaviour.
God’s Rebuke:In Jeremiah 7:21, God addresses the people and tells them that He desires more than just their religious rituals. He reminds them that He is the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel. God then challenges their practice of offering burnt offerings and sacrifices, saying, “Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.”
The Message:Through this statement, God is rebuking the people for their hypocritical behaviour. He is essentially saying that their burnt offerings and sacrifices hold no value to Him if they are not accompanied by sincere hearts and obedient lives. The act of offering sacrifices was meant to be an expression of worship and repentance, but the people had turned it into a mere ritual devoid of true devotion and righteousness.
The Call to True Repentance:God desires genuine repentance from His people. He wants them to turn away from their sinful ways and return to Him with wholehearted devotion. Verse 22 continues with God’s message: “For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices.” God is reminding the people that their external religious acts alone are not enough to please Him; He desires obedience and a sincere relationship with them.
Application:The message of Jeremiah 7:21 is relevant for us today. It reminds us that God values our sincere worship and obedience above religious rituals. Going through the motions of religious practices without a genuine heart transformation does not please God. He desires that we worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24) and walk in obedience to His commandments.
- True Worship and Obedience:In light of this passage, we should examine our own lives and ask ourselves if our worship of God is genuine or if it has become a mere routine. Are we sincerely seeking to live in obedience to God’s Word, or are we merely going through religious motions? Let us remember that God desires a heartfelt relationship with us, where our worship is rooted in love, obedience, and devotion.
Remember, a Bible study should not end with gaining knowledge but should lead to personal reflection, application, and growth in our relationship with God.
