Jeremiah 11:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:05

And the Lord hath giuen mee knowledge of it, and I knowe it, then thou shewedst me their doings. Jeremiah 11:18 (KJV)

Context: Jeremiah 11 is a chapter in the Book of Jeremiah that contains a message of judgment and warning against the people of Judah for their disobedience to God’s covenant. In this particular verse, Jeremiah speaks about the revelation he received from the Lord regarding the wicked actions of certain individuals. The chapter recites how Israel broke its covenant with God and the resulting consequences, and it describes the conspiracies formed against the prophet Jeremiah himself (Jeremiah 11:19‑23).

Key Themes:

  • Divine Knowledge and Revelation – Jeremiah acknowledges that the Lord has given him knowledge and insight into the actions of certain individuals. While Jeremiah affirms that God reveals the deeds of the people, the broader theme that God knows the actions of the nation is evident throughout Jeremiah 11.
  • God’s Awareness – Jeremiah acknowledges that God is fully aware of the evil deeds committed by these people. The chapter underscores God’s omniscience, emphasizing that He sees the sins of Judah even when they are hidden.
  • Prophetic Role – The verse emphasizes Jeremiah’s role as a prophet and messenger of God. Jeremiah’s role as a messenger is highlighted as he conveys God’s warnings, even when doing so brings personal danger.
  • Opposition and Persecution – The following verses (Jeremiah 11:19‑23) reveal that Jeremiah faced opposition and persecution as a result of his prophetic ministry. Verses 19‑23 reveal that Jeremiah faced hostility because of his prophetic ministry; conspirators plotted against him, reflecting the risks prophets often endured.
  • Divine Justice – The passage foreshadows the divine judgment that would come upon the wicked individuals mentioned. The passage points toward future judgment on those who persist in rebellion, assuring that God will enact justice in due time.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Awareness of God’s Knowledge – Just as Jeremiah recognized that God knew about the actions of certain people, we should be mindful that God is fully aware of everything we do. Recognizing that God observes all actions should encourage obedience and integrity.
  • Faithfulness in Proclaiming God’s Word – Jeremiah remained faithful to his prophetic calling, even in the face of opposition. Jeremiah’s perseverance despite threats models the call for believers to speak truth boldly, even when unpopular.
  • Trust in Divine Justice – When facing persecution or injustice, we can find comfort in knowing that God is a just and righteous judge. In moments of persecution or unfair treatment, believers can find comfort in the promise that God, as a righteous judge, will ultimately vindicate the faithful.
  • The Importance of Repentance – The passage highlights the need for individuals to turn away from wickedness and repent of their sins. Jeremiah’s warnings remind us to turn from sin, as continued disobedience leads to serious consequences.
  • God’s Revelation and Guidance – Just as God revealed the actions of the wicked to Jeremiah, He can also guide and reveal His will to us. Just as God revealed the conspirators’ plans to Jeremiah, He continues to offer guidance to those who earnestly seek Him through prayer and Scripture.
  • Note: The wording “And the Lord hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings.” is not found in Jeremiah 11 in the King James Version; it appears in other biblical passages but is not part of the text of Jeremiah 11.
