Jeremiah 11:17

For the Lord of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.

Jeremiah 11:17 (KJV)

Jeremiah prophesied during the reigns of Judah’s kings, especially Josiah, Jehoiakim, and Zedekiah. In this chapter, the Lord reminds Israel of the covenant made with their ancestors when they were brought out of Egypt. The people of Judah and Jerusalem have broken that covenant by turning to other gods, especially Baal, and engaging in idolatry. Jeremiah 11:17 is the Lord’s declaration of judgment in response to this covenant unfaithfulness.

The term “evil” refers to the calamity and punishment that would fall on them as a consequence of their wickedness and idolatry. God’s judgment is just and righteous, a direct result of their persistent disobedience. The verse begins by referring to the LORD of hosts as the one who “planted thee,” highlighting that God had established and nurtured the nation of Israel. He chose them as His special people, brought them out of Egypt, and settled them in the promised land. Yet their unfaithfulness and turn to other gods provoked His anger.

The people of Israel and Judah had forsaken worship of the true God and turned to Baal, a false Canaanite deity associated with fertility and rain. Their offerings of incense to Baal were a direct affront to God, violating the covenant they had made with Him and inciting His righteous anger. The phrase “against themselves” underscores the irony that their rebellion was ultimately self-harming, as it provoked the Lord’s righteous anger. Their idolatrous practices demonstrated a lack of trust and loyalty toward the LORD. Although God is patient and merciful, continued disobedience and provocation inevitably lead to His righteous judgment.

The title “LORD of hosts” denotes His supreme authority and power over all heavenly and earthly armies. The image of planting recalls how the Lord had established Israel like a green olive tree, as described in Jeremiah 11:16, with blessings and fruitfulness. The same God who planted them is now pronouncing disaster against them because of their evil deeds. This judgment is not arbitrary but is a direct consequence of covenant violation, as the Lord had reminded them of the covenant made with their ancestors when they were brought out of Egypt.

This verse serves as a warning against the dangers of idolatry and disobedience. The Israelites were called to worship the one true God alone and to remain faithful to Him. Their idolatrous practices led them astray and resulted in severe consequences, reminding believers to avoid idolatry and to honor God with reverence and obedience. For the Christian reader, this passage is a sobering reminder of God’s holiness and the consequences of unfaithfulness. It also points to the faithfulness of God, who, despite judgment, continued to send prophets like Jeremiah to call His people back to repentance.

Jeremiah 11:17 underscores the importance of remaining faithful to God and the consequences that follow when people turn away from Him and engage in idolatry. It stands as a solemn reminder of God’s justice and the need for repentance and obedience. The same God who planted His people in blessing also holds them accountable for their covenant faithfulness, calling them back to Himself before judgment falls.
