Jeremiah 13:15

Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the Lord hath spoken.

Jeremiah 13:15 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah contains prophecies and messages from God to the people of Judah during a time of great moral and spiritual decline. Jeremiah was called by God to deliver messages of warning and judgment to the nation. In this verse, Jeremiah is delivering a message to the people, urging them to listen and humble themselves before the Lord.

“Hear ye, and give ear.” Jeremiah begins by calling the people’s attention to his words. The doubled command emphasizes the need for strict and careful attention, both to what has been said and to what follows. He wants them to pay careful attention because the message carries significant importance.

“Be not proud.” Pride is a common theme throughout the Bible, and it often leads to disobedience and a disregard for God’s commands. The people of Judah had become arrogant and self-reliant, trusting in their own strength and wisdom rather than relying on God. Jeremiah warns them against this prideful attitude and calls for humility before the Lord. Pride can cause people to despise God’s word and His messengers, making them too elevated to hear what God says.

“For the LORD hath spoken.” Jeremiah emphasizes that the words he speaks are not his own but are a direct message from the Lord. By acknowledging God’s authority, Jeremiah highlights the seriousness and significance of the message. The appeal is grounded in the authority of God Himself; the message is not merely human advice but divine revelation. The people are called to listen and respond accordingly because it is God who is speaking through His prophet.

Humility before God: The verse reminds us to maintain an attitude of humility before God. Pride can hinder our relationship with Him and prevent us from hearing His voice. It is essential to recognize our dependence on God and submit ourselves to His will.

Attentiveness to God’s Word: Just as the people of Judah were called to listen, we are also called to give ear to God’s Word. This requires actively engaging with Scripture, studying it, and allowing it to shape our lives. By seeking to understand and apply God’s Word, we position ourselves to hear His voice and receive His guidance.

Recognizing God’s Authority: The verse reminds us that God’s authority surpasses our own. We should approach His Word with reverence and obedience, recognizing that He is the ultimate authority over our lives. By aligning ourselves with His will, we can experience His guidance and blessings.

Jeremiah 13:15 serves as a reminder to the people of Judah, and to us today, to humble ourselves before God, listen attentively to His Word, and acknowledge His authority in our lives. The urgency of responding to God’s word is underscored by the next verse, which urges giving glory to God before darkness and stumbling come. By doing so, we position ourselves to receive His guidance, blessings, and direction.
