Jeremiah 16:21

Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The Lord.

Jeremiah 16:21 (KJV)

Jeremiah ministered to the southern kingdom of Judah during a period of profound spiritual decline and impending judgment. The people had turned away from God, embraced idolatry, and engaged in various forms of wickedness. Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry repeatedly warned of the imminent destruction of Jerusalem and the exile to Babylon, calling the nation to repentance. This verse concludes a chapter in which God pronounces judgment on Judah for their disobedience, promising that no one will escape His judgment.

God declares, “I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD.” The phrase “this once” emphasizes the uniqueness and finality of this revelation. “My hand” signifies divine intervention and sovereign control over human affairs, while “my might” emphasizes God’s incomparable strength. The name “The LORD” (Yahweh) conveys God’s self-existence, eternal nature, and faithfulness to His covenant promises. This knowledge is not merely intellectual but experiential, brought about through the judgment and restoration that God will accomplish. Through this proclamation God seeks to make Himself known so that the people recognize His true nature and acknowledge Him as the one true God.

God’s actions in history are aimed at revealing His character and glory. This verse connects to the broader biblical theme that God makes Himself known through His mighty acts, ultimately fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ, who is the fullest revelation of God’s power and name.

Just as God desired to be known by the people of Judah, He desires to be known by us today. We are called to pursue an intimate relationship with Him, not merely intellectual knowledge but heartfelt communion. This involves devoted prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and faithful obedience to His commands.

God’s hand and might continue to be active in the world. Acknowledging His sovereignty and trusting His plans, even amid difficulty, brings comfort and assurance. Remembering His power and faithfulness steadies us in the midst of life’s challenges.

As followers of Christ we bear the name of the Lord. Our lives should reflect His character and bring glory to His name, so that others may perceive the reality of God’s presence and power in us.

God’s actions in history, even when they involve judgment or discipline, are aimed at revealing His character and glory. This verse encourages trust in God’s sovereign purposes and calls for a response of reverent awe and worship.
