Jeremiah 16:21
Therefore behold, I will this once cause them to know: I will cause them to knowe mine hand and my might, and they shall know that my name is the Lord. Jeremiah 16:21 (KJV)
Jeremiah was a prophet who ministered to the southern kingdom of Judah during a period of profound spiritual decline and impending judgment. The people had turned away from God, embraced idolatry, and engaged in various forms of wickedness. Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry repeatedly warned of the imminent destruction of Jerusalem and the exile to Babylon, calling the nation to repentance.
In Jeremiah 16:21 God declares, “I will cause them to know my hand and my might, and they shall know that my name is The LORD.” The reference to “my hand” signifies divine intervention and sovereign control over human affairs, while “my might” emphasizes God’s incomparable strength. The verse also adds that the people will “see the king of the north, and the prince shall be brought near,” indicating that God will make His power unmistakably evident through historical events. The name “The LORD” (Yahweh) conveys God’s self‑existence, eternal nature, and faithfulness to His covenant promises. Through this proclamation God seeks to make Himself known so that the people recognize His true nature and acknowledge Him as the one true God.
a) Seeking a Genuine Relationship: Just as God desired to be known by the people of Judah, He desires to be known by us today. We are called to pursue an intimate relationship with Him, not merely intellectual knowledge but heartfelt communion. This involves devoted prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and faithful obedience to His commands.
b) Recognising God’s Sovereignty: God’s hand and might continue to be active in the world. Acknowledging His sovereignty and trusting His plans, even amid difficulty, brings comfort and assurance. Remembering His power and faithfulness steadies us in the midst of life’s challenges.
c) Acknowledging God’s Name: As followers of Christ we bear the name of the Lord. Our lives should reflect His character and bring glory to His name, so that others may perceive the reality of God’s presence and power in us.
