Jeremiah 23:27

Listen to this article

“Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal.”

Historical context:The book of Jeremiah is attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, who lived during the last decades of the kingdom of Judah before its destruction by the Babylonians. Jeremiah prophesied during a time of spiritual and moral decline among God’s people, warning them of impending judgement if they did not turn back to Him.

False prophets and dreams:In this verse, God expresses His displeasure with the false prophets of Jeremiah’s time. These prophets claimed to have dreams and visions from God, but their messages were not in alignment with the truth and character of God. Instead of leading the people to remember and honour God’s name, they were causing them to forget it.

Leading others astray:The false prophets were spreading their deceptive dreams and false teachings to the people, encouraging them to turn away from the worship of Yahweh, the true God, and instead follow after the false gods, particularly Baal. By doing so, they were leading the people away from the genuine relationship with God and into idolatry.

Forgetting God’s name:The phrase “forget my name” is symbolic of forgetting God Himself and disregarding His authority and character. God’s name represents His nature, His covenant relationship with His people, and His authority over their lives. The false prophets, by promoting false dreams and false gods, were causing the people to forget who God truly was and to abandon their allegiance to Him.

Comparison with the past:God draws a parallel between the current situation and the past, stating that their fathers had also forgotten His name for Baal. This refers to the historical pattern of Israel’s repeated idolatry, where they turned away from the worship of Yahweh to follow after the Canaanite god Baal and other false gods. The present generation was repeating the same mistakes as their ancestors, disregarding the true God for idols.

Application for today:While this verse specifically addresses the false prophets of Jeremiah’s time, the underlying principles are still relevant today. It serves as a reminder to be discerning and cautious of false teachings and deceptive messages that lead people away from the truth of God’s Word. We should diligently seek the truth, study the Scriptures, and compare any teachings we encounter with the revealed Word of God to avoid being led astray.

In conclusion, Jeremiah 23:27 highlights the dangers of false prophets and their deceptive dreams, which cause people to forget God’s name and turn to idolatry. It serves as a call to remain steadfast in the truth of God’s Word, discerning false teachings, and striving to maintain a genuine relationship with God.
